Our journey
Our journey began with a long-held desire to return to South Africa after decades abroad and build something connected to landscape, conservation, and long-term stewardship. What drew us to the Karoo was not perfection, but the possibility that even heavily degraded land could recover through patience, thoughtful intervention, and time.

A Landscape Reconsidered
Our first visit to Aardvark Bioreserve took place during a severe drought in the Karoo. The landscape felt harsh and depleted. The soil had turned to dust, the wind carried sand across the plains, and there was little visible movement or birdlife. At first glance, the reserve appeared exhausted.
What changed our perspective was learning to look beyond the immediate conditions of drought and recognise the deeper character of the landscape itself — the scale of the rolling terrain, the mineral-blue mountains, the ancient geology, the remarkable diversity of succulents, and the clarity of the night sky.
Over time, we realised we were not looking at a failed landscape, but at an environment that required restoration, patience, and a different way of understanding resilience.

Building from Foundations
We arrived with very little practical experience in farming, conservation, or hospitality. What followed became a process of learning — guided by ecologists, conservationists, local knowledge, and the realities of working within a semi-arid environment.
During the first years, while still based abroad, the focus remained almost entirely on foundational ecological work and infrastructure: stabilising the land, improving water systems, reducing environmental impact, and creating the conditions for biodiversity to recover gradually over time.

Rehabilitating degraded sections of the reserve through erosion control, habitat restoration, and low-impact land management.
Protecting indigenous vegetation and creating conditions that support the return of birdlife and broader biodiversity.
Establishing responsible water systems suited to the realities of the Karoo climate and long-term groundwater stewardship.
Transitioning key infrastructure off-grid to reduce external dependency and environmental pressure
Implementing wildlife and landscape management practices that support ecological resilience and natural movement across the reserve

Built Through Patience & Care
Much of the early work at Aardvark was slow, practical, and largely unseen. Yet these foundations shaped the direction of the reserve: stewardship rather than extraction, long-term ecological recovery rather than short-term gain, and the belief that damaged landscapes can recover when managed with restraint and consistency.
Over time, the reserve began to change — through returning vegetation, improved biodiversity, stabilised systems, and a growing sense of ecological balance across the land.

Aardvark Bioreserve continues to evolve through ongoing restoration, learning, and long-term environmental stewardship. What began as an encounter with a drought-stricken landscape has become a broader commitment to conservation, hospitality, and creating meaningful experiences within the Karoo itself. The reserve remains a work in progress — shaped gradually by climate, landscape, ecology, and time.
