EXPERIENCES, DEFINED
BY FREEDOM

Aardvark Bioreserve is designed to be explored at your own pace. With very few guests across 5,000 hectares of private reserve, the Karoo opens gradually — through movement, observation, and time spent within the landscape rather than around fixed schedules.

Over 100 kilometres of mountain biking, trail running, and hiking routes traverse the reserve’s valleys, ridgelines, and open plains, while guided nature drives offer deeper insight into the ecology and botanical richness of the Succulent Karoo.

Experiences at Aardvark range from active days across rugged terrain to long, slow evenings shaped by Karoo cuisine, open fires, and uninterrupted quiet. The emphasis throughout remains on flexibility, independence, and a more personal engagement with the reserve.

NATURE
Walk & Drive

A Botanical Perspective on the Karoo.

Explore the reserve on foot or through guided nature drives across 5,000 hectares of the Succulent Karoo — one of the world’s most botanically significant arid ecosystems. These experiences focus on the extraordinary diversity of indigenous succulents, quartz-field microhabitats, and specialised plant communities that define the region.

Rather than traditional game viewing, the emphasis is on understanding the ecology, geology, and subtle rhythms of the Karoo landscape — from seasonal flowering cycles to the highly adaptive species uniquely evolved for this environment.

Extraordinary
succulent diversity

The Succulent Karoo contains one of the world’s richest concentrations of specialised arid plant species, many found nowhere else on earth. Across the reserve, quartz fields, rocky outcrops, and mineral-rich soils support an extraordinary variety of indigenous succulents uniquely adapted to this harsh environment.

Seasonal shifts reveal changing textures, flowering cycles, and subtle variations in colour and form throughout the year. From butter trees and vygies to sculptural aloes and euphorbias, the vegetation at Aardvark reflects an ecosystem shaped by adaptation, scarcity, and geological time.

Wildlife is encountered naturally across the reserve, but it is the botanical character of the landscape that distinguishes the experience — offering a quieter and more layered perspective on the Klein Karoo than traditional wildlife-focused reserves.

Nature drive

APPROXIMATELY 2 HOURS

Morning and afternoon nature drives take place in open vehicles and move through diverse sections of the reserve, from open plains and ridgelines to quartz fields and succulent-rich habitats. These drives provide a slower and more detailed perspective on the ecology of the Succulent Karoo, with opportunities to observe indigenous plant life, seasonal changes, geological formations, and wildlife encountered naturally along the way.

Drives may be booked as shared outings with a limited number of other guests or privately for a more tailored experience. Private drives can also incorporate specific botanical or ecological interests and may include sundowners in the veld. All drives are subject to availability and weather conditions and should be pre-booked.

Mountain Biking

Over 100km of Trails

Aardvark offers over 100 kilometres of mountain biking trails that traverse valleys, ridgelines, open plains, and rugged Karoo terrain across both the eastern and western sections of the reserve. Routes range from accessible blue trails for developing riders to more technical red sections designed for experienced cyclists, with distances extending from shorter 5km loops to full-day rides of up to 65km.

A distinctive feature of the network is the system of “green trails,” which follow natural animal paths through the reserve, creating a riding experience that feels closely integrated with the surrounding terrain. The scale of the reserve allows for long, uninterrupted riding through remote sections of the landscape, with very few guests and no public-road crossings across much of the network.

All routes are carefully mapped and can be downloaded directly to Garmin devices for self-guided exploration. Select cottages, including Die Opstal and Gemsbok Cottage, provide dedicated bicycle storage and preparation areas for guests travelling with equipment.

HIKING & TRAIL
Running

Exploring the Karoo on Foot

A network of hiking and trail running routes allows guests to experience the reserve at a slower pace, moving through remote sections of the Karoo rarely encountered by vehicle. Trails such as Eland, Kudu, and Springbok vary in distance and difficulty, passing through rocky outcrops, dry riverbeds, succulent-rich plains, and elevated viewpoints across the reserve.

Exploring the landscape on foot reveals the finer details of the Succulent Karoo — from animal tracks and geological formations to seasonal wildflowers, birdlife, and the subtle textures of this highly specialised environment. With very few guests across the reserve, each route retains a strong sense of quiet, openness, and independence.
