Contemporary Karoo living
within a private bioreserve.
Contemporary cottages, curated Karoo cuisine, guided nature drives, mountain biking, hiking, and complete independence within 5,000 hectares of private reserve in the Klein Karoo, approximately four hours from Cape Town.
Aardvark Bioreserve lies within the Succulent Karoo — one of the world’s most botanically significant arid ecosystems — where conservation, architecture, food, and hospitality exist as part of the same landscape. Defined by extraordinary succulent diversity, open plains, mountain terrain, and a deliberately limited number of guests, the reserve offers a quieter and more independent approach to luxury in the Karoo.

Food forms an integral part of the stay. Seasonal produce grown on the reserve is complemented by carefully sourced Klein Karoo ingredients, allowing guests to prepare and share meals in fully equipped contemporary kitchens designed for relaxed, extended living.
Aardvark is not a traditional safari lodge. It is a destination for guests who value space, authenticity, movement through the landscape, and the quieter richness of the Karoo — where ecology, cuisine, and solitude define the experience rather than spectacle.
“At first encounter the Karoo may seem arid, desolate and unforgiving, but to those who know it, it is a land of secret beauty and infinite variety.” - Eve Palmer

NOT A LODGE.
NOT A FARM STAY.
Aardvark is a private bioreserve designed around independence, privacy, and direct engagement with the Klein Karoo landscape.
There are no shared guest environments, fixed itineraries, or formal dining structures. Guests move through the reserve independently — on foot, by bike, through guided nature drives, or simply through time spent within the landscape itself. The experience is shaped less by programmed hospitality and more by space, flexibility, and the character of the reserve.
PRIVATE LIVING,
REDEFINED
Each cottage is positioned independently within the reserve and designed for flexible, self-directed living. Contemporary interiors, fully equipped kitchens, outdoor braai spaces, fireplaces, and wood-fired hot tubs support extended stays shaped by openness, comfort, and complete privacy within the Karoo landscape.
Rather than traditional lodge accommodation, the cottages function as private residences within the reserve — allowing guests to cook, gather, explore, and settle into the environment entirely at their own pace.

A CULINARY EXPERIENCE — ON YOUR TERMS
Dining at Aardvark is centred around the cottage rather than formal restaurant service. Seasonal Karoo produce, free-range meats, game, breads, preserves, and prepared dishes are carefully assembled in advance, allowing guests to cook and dine entirely at their own pace.
Fully equipped contemporary kitchens, outdoor braai areas, and generous indoor-outdoor living spaces create a more relaxed and independent approach to dining — shaped by quality ingredients, flexibility, and the atmosphere of the reserve itself.
AS MUCH
- OR AS LITTLE -
AS YOU CHOOSE
Guests may spend their days exploring over 100 kilometres of hiking, trail running, and mountain biking routes, or joining guided nature drives across the reserve. Equally, Aardvark lends itself to slower time — long lunches, open skies, and uninterrupted space within the landscape.
There is no fixed schedule or prescribed way to experience the reserve, only the freedom to engage with it at your own pace.

OUR COMMITMENT
TO CONSERVATION
Aardvark Bioreserve operates as a functioning bioreserve within the Succulent Karoo — one of the world’s most ecologically significant arid ecosystems. Conservation efforts across the reserve focus on biodiversity protection, habitat restoration, regenerative land management, and the long-term stewardship of this highly specialised landscape.
From the protection of indigenous succulent habitats and quartz-field ecosystems to responsible water systems and low-impact infrastructure, the reserve is managed with a carefully controlled ecological footprint. Every stay contributes directly to these ongoing conservation efforts through Aardvark’s affiliation with 1% for the Planet and its membership of The Long Run.
THE RAREST LUXURY IS SPACE — AND THE FREEDOM TO USE IT AS YOU CHOOSE.
